As a reference hospital, the Sokoine Government Hospital serves almost 1 million people in a region of the size of Bavaria.
The Sokoine Regional Hospital in Lindi, in southern Tanzania, is picturesquely situated on a small hill above Lindi Bay on the Indian Ocean.
The only ophthalmologist in the region works here under very simple conditions: he can carry out diagnostics using a so-called slit lamp, but the therapeutic options are very limited. Performing eye operations - he learned this during his training - was not possible until recently due to the lack of an expensive and necessary operating microscope. Cataract operations (opacification of the lens) in particular had to be sent to the university eye clinic in Dar Es Salaam, 500 km away - if the patients could afford it. This meant that many patients suffering from cataract in the region had to live their lives visually impaired or blind.
Dr. Buchmann and Dr. Machage
Working together for the eye patients in Lindi
Dr. Hans-Peter Buchmann worked as a development worker at Sokoine Hospital from 1989-91 and visited Lindi in 2014. He got to know the local ophthalmologist, Dr. Bokango Machage, appreciated his work and decided to help. Since the beginning of 2015, Dr. Bokango Machage has not only performed cataract operations in the regional hospital in Lindi, but has also travelled to remote areas of the region with the portable microscope in order to be able to operate his patients on site. Dr. Peter Buchmann purchased a tropical-suitable microscope for eye operations from his own funds and sent it to Lindi together with surgical instruments, necessary medication and various eye lenses that are used for cataract operations.
In order to continue the "Lindi Eye Project" in Tanzania, Dr. Bokango always needs materials and medicines that are not available locally.

The “Freundeskreis Lindi eV” supports Dr Buchmann’s
Eye project. Under the keyword “Eye Project Lindi”
you can donate to this cause. You can also contact Dr. Buchmann directly to find out more.
