Our association “Freundeskreis Lindi” was founded in 2023 to promote health care and school education in Lindi region. Lindi is a small coastal town in the south of Tanzania, it is located directly on the Indian Ocean. Lindi Region has 5 districts: Lindi town, Lindi Rural, Nachingwea, Kilwa, Rwangwa and Liwale, including Selous Game Reserve. The chairwoman of the association, Dr. Hildegard Vogt, who has been working as a doctor in Lindi for over 30 years, first with the German Development Service, then in the self-founded Brigita Dispensary, which now became Brigita General Clinic. Together with her husband Dr. Rainer Vogt, she has succeeded in developing the clinic from a small dispensary to a healthcare facility with modern diagnostics and therapy, which provides service to patients from Lindi District, but also from the whole region up to Mozambique and Dar es Salaam. The deputy chairman, Dr. Peter Buchmann, came to Lindi with the German Development Service and subsequently became a specialist in ophthalmology. He works in Munich, but he has not forgotten the people in Lindi and has been able to restore the eyesight of many patients in Lindi with his eye projects. Most members of the association have been to Lindi on visits and now want to help people there so that they have access to good health care and education, similar to Europe. New members are also welcome. Most Tanzanian families have an income that is sufficient for the food of their family, through their work in agriculture, in the office, or other activities. But when family members get sick, it is often a problem to provide the necessary money. Therefore, it is important for our health institution to have a fund that can be used to help people who do not have enough money for their examinations and treatment. And also for eye patients, who can no longer work due to their blindness. Support is also needed for patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), heart diseases and kidney diseases so that they can get their medication continuously as well as live and work normally. Since the beginning of the year 2024, the association has been recognized as a non-profit organization, and it is registered in the register of associations in Münster. It wants to be like a friend for the people in Lindi who supports them when necessary so that everybody has equal opportunities for a good education and health.
